In this paper, the role of the mass media in Nigeria has been discussed. It can be seen that the Nigerian media played an important role in the democratization process from the military regime. The media despite the oppression, torture, humiliations, loss of lives and properties of journalists, stood firm to ensure that Nigeria gain its democratic government. The media being the fourth estate of the realm created platform for discourse among people for them to make meaningful contribution to the political, social, economic and developmental issues across board throughout the country. People can make their contribution to the political democracy when public communication which is integrated into politics at all levels and the media stimulate and provide platforms for deliberation. The media can performed it role in Nigeria’s democracy effectively when given its full freedom to operate without limitations, government censorship despite the 1999 decree and monetary constrains.
